| What to consider | FCL · dedicated container | LCL · shared container |
|---|---|---|
| Handling | Plan container loading and unpacking for your consignment. | Allow for consolidation and deconsolidation, as well as collection and delivery. |
| Receiving | Confirm container access, unloading and the empty return. | Confirm package or pallet receipt, access and any delivery booking. |
| Timing | Review equipment availability, cut-offs and the booked sailing. | Include consolidation and destination unpacking milestones in the timing. |
| Cost comparison | Ask about the whole movement and applicable container time limits. | Check volume or weight assessment, minimums and handling at both ends. |
There is no universal volume threshold at which one is always cheaper. Packed dimensions, weight, handling and the current route-specific quote determine the comparison. On a narrow screen, scroll the table sideways.
From enquiry to movement
Planning your sea freight
Start with the full movement: supplier collection, origin handling, ocean carriage, destination charges, clearance and delivery. Tell us which stages you need coordinated and which are arranged by your supplier or buyer. FCL, LCL and specialist cargo options should be compared on that same scope.
Container availability, sailing schedules and cargo-ready dates need to line up. For exports, confirm equipment release, the loading address, packing responsibilities and terminal cut-offs. For imports, confirm release, delivery access, unloading and empty returns. Share final packed dimensions, weights and any temperature or handling needs in either direction.
Read the practical guideCollection, packing or consolidation, export handling and ocean carriage. Confirm the booked route and whether transhipment is involved.
Terminal or depot handling, document release, brokerage and the agreed road leg. Duty, tax and inspections need their own assessment.
Ask which storage, demurrage or detention terms apply, when the relevant clocks start and what happens if unloading is delayed.
Start with the Australian collection point and the port or delivery address your overseas customer expects. FCL gives you dedicated container space; LCL adds consolidation and receiving-depot handovers. Confirm equipment availability, loading responsibilities and the booked sailing’s document and cargo cut-offs before committing to a customer delivery date. Agree who handles overseas clearance, charges and receipt.

Useful to know
The answer depends on volume, handling needs and the total door-to-door cost. Share your packing list and we can compare suitable options.
We coordinate shipments through Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Fremantle and Adelaide, with inland delivery arrangements discussed for each shipment.
No universal cut-off applies. Compare the same route and scope using actual packed volume, weight, handling needs and current charges. Container fit and weight limits still need checking.
No. Discharge, cargo availability, required releases and transport bookings follow arrival. Discuss the date needed at your premises, not just the vessel ETA.
Ask us to define the collection, origin handling, freight, destination clearance and delivery responsibilities in writing. Door-to-door does not automatically include every tax, inspection or unloading cost.
A freight forwarder connects the shipping-line booking with the other services in your agreed scope. That can include supplier collection, origin handling, shipping documents, customs brokerage and Australian delivery. Sea Logic is based in Melbourne and coordinates freight through major Australian ports. We are your freight coordinator, not the shipping line operating the vessel.
Tell us the supplier’s collection address, Australian destination and when the cargo will be ready. Our core markets include the Far East, South East Asia, the Indian Subcontinent, Europe and Africa. The exact origin and destination determine the route, current service availability and any transhipment. Confirm the full scope before comparing quotes; a port-to-port price does not describe a door-to-door movement.
Confirm the cargo-ready date, equipment requirements, loading location and the cut-offs for the booked sailing. Identify who is arranging packing, export documents and the destination handover. Give the team final dimensions and weights rather than an estimate based on unpacked goods. The buyer’s receiving requirements and agreed shipping terms belong in the same plan.
