Start before you commit to a shipment
Talk through the proposed goods and route while there is still time to adjust the plan. A useful enquiry includes the supplier location, goods description, packaging and intended Australian destination. Avoid relying on a product price alone to estimate what it will cost to receive the shipment.
Make responsibilities clear
Ask the supplier which collection, transport and delivery stages are included in the sale. Share the written shipping terms and named place with your freight coordinator. The scope of the freight quote should match those responsibilities and make any exclusions clear.
Arrange a product-specific document review
Obtain the commercial invoice and packing list, and ask what supporting product information is needed. Requirements vary by goods and origin. Your broker should review the actual consignment; a general checklist cannot establish whether particular goods may be imported.
Plan for receipt, not just arrival
Confirm the delivery address, receiving hours and how the cargo will be unloaded. A full container, palletised LCL delivery and loose cartons can need different arrangements. Tell the team if you cannot receive immediately, so storage or a revised delivery window can be discussed.
Keep one clear shipment brief
As details change, keep dimensions, ready dates and contacts up to date. Confirm the final scope and current schedule before booking. After departure, distinguish the vessel or flight ETA from the later milestone of goods available for delivery.
