FCL: a container for your shipment
Full Container Load gives your cargo a dedicated container. It can suit larger volumes or shipments that benefit from travelling together. The container does not necessarily have to be filled to capacity.
LCL: space within a shared container
Less than Container Load combines multiple consignments in the same container. It offers an option for smaller shipments, with consolidation and deconsolidation forming part of the journey.
Compare the complete movement
Volume is only part of the decision. Consider collection, consolidation, terminal handling, destination charges, delivery and the time available. Ask for an assessment of the complete route.
Every shipment has its own requirements. Our team can help you work through the details for your cargo and route.
Plan your shipmentFCL or LCL?
Look beyond the volume.
| What to consider | FCL · dedicated container | LCL · shared container |
|---|---|---|
| Handling | Plan container loading and unpacking for your consignment. | Allow for consolidation and deconsolidation, as well as collection and delivery. |
| Receiving | Confirm container access, unloading and the empty return. | Confirm package or pallet receipt, access and any delivery booking. |
| Timing | Review equipment availability, cut-offs and the booked sailing. | Include consolidation and destination unpacking milestones in the timing. |
| Cost comparison | Ask about the whole movement and applicable container time limits. | Check volume or weight assessment, minimums and handling at both ends. |
There is no universal volume threshold at which one is always cheaper. Packed dimensions, weight, handling and the current route-specific quote determine the comparison. On a narrow screen, scroll the table sideways.
